About the Speaking Center

The Speaking Center offers appointments for individuals and small group teaching and consultation to students who would like to work on any aspect of oral communication.

We work with a range of students from many disciplines on such issues as:

• effective participation in class discussions
• crafting and delivering oral presentations
• understanding unfamiliar cultural references
• interview skills
• creative performances
• speech anxiety

Appointments are available starting in Week 3 of a new semester. Appointments are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.

What to Expect

Speaking Center teachers can help hone public speaking skills, gain confidence in joining class discussion, and even improve basic conversational language skills. Our appointments are casual and low-pressure, and we can work on any aspect of the speaking process from brainstorming to final delivery. Instruction is tailored to clients' individual needs and includes help with delivery techniques, methods of organizing material, strategies for effective presentations, options for preparing and practicing speeches, and methods for generating and using responses to speeches for further improvement.
